Our painting is based on elements from two compositions by Gerad van Honthorst, one in the Museo de San Carlos in Mexico and the other in the Thyssen-Bornemisza Foundation in Lugano (see Judson / Ekkart 1999, cat. no. 239 and 242, p. 188-192). Judson believes that our work was painted in the first half of the 17th century, probably by a pupil of Honthorst. The particularly high painterly quality of our painting indicates that the master himself or someone working close to him was involved.
