USHABTI

22nd – 25th dynasty, circa 946 BC – 664 BC
Third Intermediate Period of Ancient Egypt
6 × 3 × 19.5 cm

Provenance: Old Swiss private collection (Basel).

Egyptian funerary figurines known as ushabti, which means ‘answerers’, were among the most important funerary objects in Ancient Egypt. They were intended to do the fieldwork for the deceased in posterity. The statuettes were mostly made of faience, sometimes of clay or wood, and often bear the names of their owners in hieroglyphics. Egyptian ushabtis, also known as ushebtis or ushabtis, form the core of exciting Egyptological collections. The ushabtis from the New Kingdom and the Third Intermediate Period are particularly popular with collectors.

The figure presented here is in very good original condition, with a rare size of over 19 cm and a beautiful blue-green patina overall.
