LOT OF TWO PHOTOGRAPHIES
A: APOLLO 7, ‘RENDEZVOUS’
B: SIGNED POSTER OF EILEEN COLLINS TAKEN BY ANNIE LEIBOVITZ

11 – 22 October 1968
S-IVB colour photo
50.7 × 40.1 cm

Apollo 7, the first Apollo mission with a human crew, was launched on October 11, 1968, for an Earth orbital mission. Walter ‘Wally’ Schirra was commander, Donn Eisele was command module pilot, and Walter Cunningham was lunar module pilot.

The principal objectives of the mission were to show that the Block II CM would be habitable and reliable over the length of time required for a lunar mission and to show that the spacecraft's main engine in combination with the guidance systems could perform a rendezvous in orbit, and later make a precision re-entry and splashdown.

This is a rare large-format glossy photograph of the historic Apollo 7/S-IVB rendezvous in space signed by Apollo 7 pilot Walter Cunningham.

Eileen M. Collins is a former astronaut and a retired U.S. Air Force colonel. A former military instructor and test pilot, Collins was the first female pilot and first female commander of a space shuttle. She flew four NASA STS missions. A big step for Eileen and for women all over the world.

Collins graduated from the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards Air Force Base, California, in 1990. She was selected by NASA and became an astronaut in July 1991. She has logged more than 6,751 hours in 30 different types of aircraft and more than 872 hours in space as a veteran of four space flights.

The object presented here is a hand-signed photograph of Eileen Collins proudly wearing her space suit. It was taken during training in 1999 by the famous photographer Annie Leibovitz at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.
