A WOOD FIGURE OF BISHAMONTEN (GUARDIAN KING OF THE NORTH).
Japan, 18th/19th c. Height 100 cm, figure 60 cm.
Polychrome paint. Wearing armour with a tiger skin on his back, a pagoda in one hand and a lance in the other, the fierce-looking protector of the Dharma teachings stands with one foot on a demon (jyaki), symbolising the subjugation of evil. Traces of age.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection from Southern Switzerland.
