"COCONUT" TANKARD WITH SILVER-GILT MOUNT

Probably Switzerland (Sion), 16th century.
Round base on three flat feet in the shape of angel heads. Cuppa made of an unfinished coconut set with three flat, ornamented clasps. High lip rim engraved with foliage. S-shaped handle with the same decoration, a female fish as a thumb rest. The lid also made of coconut set with clasps with a central, flat finial. Engraved coat of arms, initials F+P and the year [15]86, presumably the coat of arms of a tailors' guild.
H 18.5 cm.

Comparable goblets and tankards made in Switzerland are kept in the collection of the Swiss National Museum, see Alain Gruber: Weltliches Silber. Katalog der Sammlung des Schweizerischen Landesmuseums Zürich, Zurich 1977, pp. 190-192.
