A CIRCULAR LACQUER WRITING BOX (SUZURIBAKO).
Japan, 18th/19th c. Ø 21 cm.
Decorated with Kakinomoto no Hitomaro, one of the 36 Immortal Poets, in gold hira- and takamakie with pewter inlays on roiro (black lacquer) ground. The interior with one of his poems from the Manyôshû on cloudy mura-nashiji. Ink-grinding stone (suzuri) and damascened iron water dropper (suiteki). Assorted wood box.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, purchased around the 1950s (no invoice available), thence by descent.
