Our thanks to Sabine Craft-Giepmans of RKD, The Hague, who has suggested the attribution to Anthonisz. van Ravesteyn on the basis of a photograph and dates the work to circa 1618.
Condition:
Oil on canvas, relined. Fine net of craquelures. Partly are small scratch marks, superficial pollution and small colour break-ups visible. Slight colour abrasion along the edges.
Under UV: touch-ups along the edges. Several retouching in the background as well as some touch-ups on the hair of the sitter and on his garment visible. Varnish appears in fluorescent green.
