HORST P. HORST

(Weissenfels 1906–1999 Palm Beach)
Marlene Dietrich, 1942.
Toned gelatin silver print. Somewhat later print, probably 1960s.
25.3 × 20.1 cm.
Verso signed "Horst", various handwritten inventory numbers. Matted, framed (45 ×37.5 cm).

Literature:
- Susanna Brown (ed.). Horst. Photographer of Style. London, 2014 (ill. 107, p. 113, differing fro the same series).

"Despite her immense stardom, Horst did not consider his fellow countrywoman a great beauty, commenting that 'without makeup, her face had typical flat German features. She projected sex but she was not sexy.'" (Brown, 2014, p. 108).

Bumped in the lower right corner, further bumped lower left in the black margin, light pressure mark on the right edge of the image, partly minimally rubbed in the margins, slightly spotted at the top, slight signs of oxidation mirroring at the left edge (only visible with backlight), minimally curved, verso somewhat soiled. However, overall good condition.
