NICOLAES VAN VERENDAEL

(1640 Antwerp 1691)
A pair: Bouquets of flowers with roses and carnations in stone niches.
Oil on canvas.
Each 35.5 × 30.2 cm.

Dr. Fred G. Meijer has confirmed the authenticity of these paintings by Nicolas van Verendael on the basis of a photograph and dates this pair of works to the 1680s. The floral motifs can be stylistically compared with the flower still-life featuring an antique bust in the Royal Museum of Fine Arts in Antwerp (Inv. No. 4628), which was created around 1689-90. The minimalised composition is a rarity in this artist's oeuvre.
