Robert Mols (1848-1903) war selber Maler und ein guter Freund von Vollon und war gemeinsam mit ihm in Haarlem 1872. Es ist denkbar, dass Vollon dieses Gemälde bei dieser Gelegenheit gemalt und Mols anschliessend geschenkt hat.
