The exploration of colour, colour contrast and form in space which was typical of Imi Knoebel's works from the mid-1970s onwards also comes to the fore in the limited edition work offered here, "Basler Fenster 5 ED" from 2020. The overlapping layers of the acrylic-painted foils create a complex colour arrangement. However, the highly systematised layout of the foil strips and surfaces in a kind of grid structure means that the viewer does not sink into a swirl of colours, as is the case with Knoebel's impressive stained glass windows for Notre-Dame de Reims Cathedral, for example. Instead, in this work he demonstrates a more formal and aesthetically straightforward approach situated somewhere between order and confusion. The superimposed layers of foil also generate spatial depth and complexity in our perception of the surface, while the visible brushwork lends the work the almost textile quality, as if it were a modern interpretation of an antique tapestry.
The work offered here is Variant 5 ED from the series of 12 different colour schemes of the "Basler Fenster", which Imi Knoebel published in small editions in 2020. These works refer to the six-metre-long window installation that Knoebel designed and implemented for the Volkshaus Basel.
