INCENSE BURNER, SO-CALLED BRÛLE PARFUM
Basel, ca. 1760. Maker's mark Johann Ulrich III Fechter.
On a round, multi-stepped foot. The walls and bottom with ornamental openings in the form of stars, scrolls and blossoms. Turned wooden handle.
H 6 cm, Ø 9 cm, 135 g.
Such vessels were used as aroma burners in the 18th century. It is possible that they also served as a container for glowing coal for preheating and lighting tobacco pipes (see Basler Goldschmiedekunst 2014, p. 357). A very similar brûle parfum by the same master craftsman can be found in the Collection of the Basel Historical Museum, Inventory Number HMB 1964.37, illustrated in Baseler Goldschmiedekunst 2014, No. 607).
