"Stripe paintings follow such a simple principle, that almost every art student has done them." Anselm Reyle

The so-called "Stripe Paintings", of which the present work from 2006 is an example, constitute an important series in the oeuvre of the German artist Anselm Reyle. They bring together the most important aspects and approaches of his art in a striking way.

Paintings with stripes form an integral part of the canon of art history. We think of paintings by Frank Stella, Bridget Riley, Gerhard Richter, Daniel Buren, Kenneth Noland, etc. These artists clearly committed themselves to painting through their use of stripes. Reyle is fascinated by this tradition, but also by the clichés that have become associated with these paintings. Anselm Reyle makes impressive use of these foundations and creates his own category of striped paintings with his own distinctive method.

Characteristic of all his works is the use of everyday found objects and rubbish, so that our work is also composed of stripes of acrylic, silver foil, Plexiglas and textured pastes. In this way, in one of the simplest arrangements imaginable - the juxtaposition of stripes - the varied surface creates a thoroughly exciting composition, intensified by possible instances of disruption, such as damage to the reused materials. He therefore departs from the hitherto exclusively painterly level and takes the works into the three-dimensional.

As viewers, we are surprised at how many unexpected things can be discovered in a simple picture made of stripes.
