HORAE B. M. V. -

Book of Hours. Latin script on vellum. With 13 splendid miniatures and numerous floral and figural foliate borders and initials, all in gold and colour.
Probably Northern France or Flemish, third quarter of the 15th century. 8.5 × 6.5 cm. [164] (of 165)ff. Written area 4.5 × 3 cm. 14 line Textura. Fine brown leather binding from the period, over wooden boards on 3 cords with blind embossed and scudding decoration and scrolling foliate ornament as well as lettering on the covers, 1 silver clasp, gilt edging (front hinge slightly flaking, back hinge somewhat brittle).


Very fine Book of Hours, exceptionally fine and precise Gothic Textura, 14-lines (Calendarium 17-lines) on vellum. Rubrics and ruling in red, 2-line lombards, the Calendarium with 2 line 'KL'-initials. The corresponding miniatures (each 8 x 5.3 cm) as follows: f. 13v: Crucifixion, 20v: Miracle at Pentecost, 26v: Madonna and Child, 46v: Annunciation, 59v: The two Marys, 73v: The Birth of Christ, 80v: The Annunciation to the Shepherds, 86v: Adoration of the Magi, 92v: The Presentation in the Temple, 98v: Slaughter of the Innocents, 107v: Flight into Egypt, 114v: The Resurrection, 133v: Mourners' Prayer. - Classic book of hours with liturgy of the hours 'Horae beatae Mariae virginis', further liturgical prayers and hymns, as well as Te Deum. - Well preserved and legible script. Slight browning in parts, text slightly blurred as well as small and a few larger areas of paint flaking. Leaf after fol. 95 missing, 2 front and 1 back endpaper, of which 2 leaves inscribed by another old hand.
