MOSAIC PANEL WITH A REPRESENTATION OF THE MOON GODDESS LUNA

Roman, probably Tunisia, 3rd century A.D.
Polychrome mosaic. Bust-shaped representation probably of the goddess Luna in front of a crescent moon and a snake-shaped staff (Rod of Asclepius?) in a rectangular double frame. Mounted in later wooden frame.
Inner dimensions 51 × 55.5 cm.


Various supplements. Mosaic stones somewhat abraded.

Provenance:
- Antiquarian bookshop Dr. Roland Hartmann, St. Gallen (according to Galleria Serodine).
- Galleria Serodine, Ascona, October 2003.

A similar mosaic representation of the goddess Selene, also as a bust portrait with a crescent moon in the background, is in the house of the planetarium in Santiponce. The Roman city was founded in 206 B.C. by the Roman general Scipio under the name of Italica.
