FEMALE FIGURE WEARING A ROBE

Greek, 2nd-1st century B.C.
light-colored marble carved full round. Dressed in a floor-length chiton, over it a himation, draped off the shoulder. The head in the style of the Capitoline Venus, added later. Mounted on an iron plinth.
H without plinth 69 cm.


Some chipping and chips. The head is a later addition. Three drilled holes in the shoulder area. Right arm and left forearm are missing. Reattached above the knee with original parts.

Provenance:
- "Monsieur R." collection, Belgium, acquired 1968 (according to Gallery Cahn).
- English art dealer, 2013.
- Galerie Cahn, Basel, 2015.

A similar draped figure of the "Praxitelean type," traditionally identified as Persephone, is in the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, Boston, Massachusetts (inventory No. S5c1). See also C.C. Vermeule, Greek and Roman Sculpture in America, Berkeley and Los Angeles, 1981, p. 86, No. 57.
