FRAGMENT OF A FRESCO

Roman, 1st/2nd century A.D.
Polychrome fresco on a cream-colored ground. Depiction of a young woman looking back over her shoulder. She is dressed in a cream and ocher himation which is attached to her left shoulder, below that she is wearing a long chiton with linear, delicate drapery. In shades of crimson and umber.
H 28 cm (inner dimensions). With frame: 39 × 20 cm.


Restored and in part repaired. Mounted on mortar and in a later wooden frame.

Provenance:
- Private collection, USA, acquired in Paris in the 1970s (according to Bonhams).
- North American Art Dealers (according to Bonhams).
- Auction Bonhams, London, 15 October 2008, Lot No. 223.
