A PAIR OF SIMILAR COMMODES

Rococo, Berne, ca. 1760 and later. In the manner of Johannes Aebersold (1737–1812).
Walnut, yew, and maple inlaid in reserves with cube marquetry. Curved body on curved legs. Front with two sans-traverse drawers. One drawer lined with pasted paper on the inside, later. Later bronze mounts designed as rocailles and scrolls. 2 keys.
75 × 53.5 × 80 cm.

- One commode is a later copy.
- Restored.
- In part bleached.
- Repairs and losses to the veneer.
- Cracks.


A similarly shaped men's coiffeuse with cube marquetry, but questionably attributed to Mathäus Funk, is depicted in: Heinrich Kreisel, Die Kunst des Deutschen Möbels - Spätbarock und Rokoko, Munich, 1970, Ill. 1143.
