This work is a preliminary study for the large-format painting "La Bacchanale du Tigre Royal" from 1920, which Maurice Denis painted for the Geneva fur shop "le tigre royal" at the request of the manager at the time. The main work is now in the possession of the Niigata Museum in Japan. Another study of the painting is exhibited today in the Bridgestone Museum in Tokyo.
