A FOUR-CASE LACQUER INRO DEPICTING DARUMA.
Japan, 19th c. Height 6.5 cm.
The yawning and stretching Daruma in red, silver and gold takamakie on black ishime ground, the other side shows a hossu (Buddhist whisk). Signed in red lacquer of the Daruma robe. A few very minor chips.
Provenance: Old Swiss private collection, thence by descent.
The decoration is reminiscent of the style of the artists Shibata Zeshin (1807-1891) or Ogawa Haritsu (1663-1747).
