A WOOD FIGURE OF THE SEATED ENMA-O (KING ENMA)
Japan, Momoyama/early Edo period, height 35.5 cm.
With remnants of black paint, the expressive eyes are inlaid. The bearded, grim-looking guardian king of the hell wears his typical official cap, which emphasizes his bureaucratic function as a judge of the underworld. Rest. and cracks.
