AN IMPOSING FIGURE OF THE BYAKUE KANNON (WHITE-ROBED GUANYIN).

Japan, Edo period, 18th/19th c. Height 46 cm, in total 136.5 cm.
Wood, red and gold lacquer, the eyes inlaid. Large figure seated on a tall tiered lotus stand. At back adorned with a halo, polychrom painted with lotus. In three parts. Light traces of age, crack to figure.


Provenance: Old private collection from Southern Germany.
The White-robed Kannon is part of the esoteric pantheon and represents one of the 33 Kannon manifestations. Prevents disease and calamity, grants fertility as well as safe childbirth and helps in child raising.
