IVORY RELIEF, PROBABLY DEPICTING THE ORACLE OF DELPHI

18th century.
Octagonal ivory plaque carved in relief. Mythological depiction, probably of the enthroned Pythia as High Priestess of the Temple of Apollo in Delphi, surrounded by a curtain and kneeling and praying women as well as a seated woman with a child in her lap. In the background: a sacrificial bowl with rising smoke and temple architecture. The edge of the octagonal relief features a pearl and acanthus frieze. Mounted on a wooden support, the back covered with leather.
Without wooden support 9.2 × 6.5 cm.
