TWO IVORY RELIEFS PROBABLY FROM A NATIVITY SCENE

Southern Italy or Dieppe, 18th/19th century.

H without frame 7.5 cm.
For the exportation of this item a CITES license is required. Prospective buyers should familiarize themselves with relevant customs regulations prior to bidding if they intend to import this lot into another country. For further information please contact the department.

Provenance:
- Joachim Brandt (according to the inventory without further details).
- Collection Dr. E. Boehlen, Berne, acquired from the above gallery.

On the one hand, the carvings are reminiscent of multi-figure works from the 18th century in Southern Italy, which were, inter alia, also executed in coral. On the other hand, the sharp silhouettes and pointed faces are reminiscent of works from Dieppe, which were produced until the 19th century. For a stylistically comparable work, see Christian Theuerkauff: Elfenbein. Reiner Winkler Collection. Munich 1984, p. 209, fig. 130.

This object cannot be exported from Switzerland due to the use of protected materials and the lack of documentation.
