LOT OF EIGHT EARLY ARABIC CHESS PIECES
8th-17th century.
Ivory painted green and red, carved with gold leaf ornaments and floral motifs. Comprising five pawns and three further figures.
H ca. 4.5 cm.

It is quite difficult to date this simple form of game piece, which has been used for centuries. Two comparable figures by Bauer, dated 8th/9th century. illustrated in: Hans and Siegfried Wichmann: Chess - The story of Chesspieces from Antiquity to Modern times. London 1964, No. 4 and 5. Further examples of chess pieces dated to the 13th/14th century. and 17th century are illustrated in: Dresdner Bank: Exhibition catalog, Chess, Culture - Art - Philosophy. Pieces and Games from the Middle Ages to the Present. Frankfurt 1988, fig. 60 & 61.
