EMBROIDERED CROSS OF A CHASUBLE
Probably Middle Rhine, ca. 1450-1500.
Gold and metal threads and polychrome wool weaving mounted on later linen fabric. Central depiction with Christ on the cross, crowned by God the Father, flanked by St. Peter and St. Paul, below the Virgin Mary and probably Mary Magdalene ,and in the lowest register another saint under a starry sky. Framed.
Without frame 110 × 58 cm, total 122 × 81 cm.
The Schnütgen Museum in Cologne has a similar embroidered cross from ca. 1450-1500. Although the fineness of the embroidery and the color transitions are finer, the composition and figure configuration are similar to our example, so that the dating and attribution to the Middle Rhine area around Cologne seem justified. The naturalistically designed cross with the tree trunks and the clipped branches is particularly striking.
