MANTEL CLOCK WITH A FIGURE OF "DAVID VAINQUEUR"

France, late 19th century. Signed A. Mercié (Marius-Jean-Antonin Mercié 1845-1916) and foundry signature F. Barbedienne Fondeur Paris 862.
Architectural "Griotte Rouge" marble case. The dial signed Barbedienne Paris. Parisian movement with half hour strike on bell. Brown patinated bronze figure of David with the severed head of Goliath. The pendulum is missing. Reproduction stamp inscribed: Réduction Mécanique A Collas Breveté.
Total height 103.5 cm. Figure H 73 cm.

The foundry Barbedienne bought the permission to produce this bronze in 1874 and made it in six different reductions until 1911. The bronze of David on offer is in the second reduction. Cf.
