The painting offered here takes up part of van Dyck's composition, which is in the Mauritshuis in The Hague (inv. no. 239; see Barnes et al.: Van Dyck. A complete Catalogue of the Paintings, Yale University 2004, cat. no. III.133, p. 355) and depicts the Antwerp draper Peeter Stevens (c. 1590-1668), who commissioned his portrait from van Dyck after his trip to Italy. Van Dyck painted the counterpart one year later (1628), which shows the draper's wife, Anna Wake, in rich French clothing (Mauritshuis, The Hague, inv. no. 240).
