NIGHT CLOCK
Southern Germany, ca. 1800.
Black-painted wood with gilt profile moldings. Rectangular, stepped case on spherical feet. Metal frontispiece, painted with the Abduction of Persephone. Gilt brass chapter ring with pierced Roman numerals for the hours. Small movement with verge escapement and short pendulum, visible in a pendulum window. Spring-winding via the side (cracked). Roof with a chimney, the clock was lit by a candle at night.
