PAOLO DE MATTEIS
(Cilento 1662–1728 Naples)
Pair of works: two scenes from Orlando Furioso.
Oil on panel.
56.5 × 57 cm each.
Provenance:
- With art dealer Canessa, Rome, before 1986.
- European private collection.
Literature:
Nicola Spinosa: Pittura napoletana del Settecento, dal Barocco al Rococò, Naples 1986, p. 132, cat. no. 117, ill. 138–139.
These two scenes from the epic poem 'Orlando Furioso' (1516) by Ludovico Ariosto are of rare painterly vividness and probably originally decorated the sides of a chest. According to Nicola Spinosa (see literature), these works of exceptional quality are among the most innovative productions in the œuvre of Paolo de Mattei, who was inclined towards refined, worldly tastes.
