A BUST OF PTOLEMY II PHILADELPHUS
Probably 18th century, after a model from Antiquity.
Hollowed terracotta, with polychrome paintwork.
H 32.5 cm.

The figure on offer is of Ptolemy II Philadelphus, formerly known as "Ptolemy IX Lathyros" (49 BC - 25 AD). The original bronze bust can be found in Naples(Italy) in the National Archaeological Museum. The bronze bust was excavated in the Herculaneum, Villa dei Papiri, Atrium, on 23 March 1754. At that time, an artist had molded this bust in clay from the original model.
