BIDET

Louis XV, signed J.M. PETIT (Jean Marie Petit, maître 1777), guild stamp, France ca. 1770/80.
Shaped walnut. Flat backrest with hinged leather surface over 3 compartments. The lidded seat with faience bowl with fine blue painting. 80 x 46 x 45 x 85 cm.

J.M. Petit was the son of the ebenist Jean Petit and took over his father's workshop in the Rue du Faubourg, Saint Antoine. He supplied the "Garde Meuble de la Reine" with numerous small items of furniture and used both his own and his father's signature, so it is not always possible to attribute the works precisely.

Literature: P. Kjellberg, Le mobilier français du XVIIIe siècle, Paris 1989; p. 642 (biographical information).
