Born in 1936 in Bern, the Swiss artist Christian Megert began his artistic career with monochrome paintings and sculptures. In the early 1960s, mirrors and glass were his preferred materials. In his manifesto "Neuer Raum" in 1961, Megert demanded that we consider space anew with the help of art. With this idea in mind, he broke or over-painted mirrors and reassembled them, so that a new space would be created, arriving at an interlocking of painting and space.
The present work, after a design from 1960, is an outstanding example of his work and shows how close it was to that of the German group ZERO. He took part in some ZERO exhibitions in Europe and organised a ZERO exhibition himself in Switzerland.
