RENAISSANCE KNIFE

Italy, probably Florence, ca. 1500.
Flat, slightly trapezoidal niello handle engraved on both sides with figures and allegorical reserves as well as a blind coat of arms cartouche. The back of the handle inscribed FURENTI and the underside CEDE. Rounded, curved brass handle cap partly engraved with scrolled leaves. Rectangular stepped brass collar. Edged and retracted gilt handle bolster. Partially engraved and gilt blade with sickle point. Decorated with a drummer viewed from behind, a bird of paradise and Cupid. Probably formerly with continuous decoration along the entire blade.
L 26.1 cm.


Handle cap heavily rubbed. Lower part of the handle with larger losses to the silver. Handle collar with crack and somewhat crooked. Handle collar slightly loose. Blade heavily corroded and heavily worn in some areas. Gilding in part rubbed.
