HORAE B. M. V. -

Book of Hours. Latin script on smoothed vellum. With 17 large miniatures in colour and gold with rich figural and floral borders, 17 five-line major initials, as well as numerous 2-line initials in gold and colour.
Flanders(?), circa 1460. 19.5 × 14 cm. [1] w., [144], [1] w. ff. 17 lines black-brown textura on red lines. Written area 10 × 65 cm. Restored blind embossed leather binding using original cover over wooden boards over 4 cords with scudding ornamentation, 2 recent gilt brass clasps, gilt edge (upper spine end loose, spine and edges rubbed, somewhat worn, small losses and a few small worm holes).


The miniatures show: 1. Christ on the cross before a rocky landscape, with 8 small format images from the Passion. - 2. Pouring forth of the Holy Spirit. Mary in a hall of columns. - 3. Maria with the Infant Jesus on a throne surrounded by angels - 4. Mary and Ann. 5. The Birth of Christ. - 6. The Angel appearing before the Shepherds. - 7. Adoration of the Magi. - 8. The presentation in the temple. - 9. The Slaughter of the Innocents- 10. The Flight into Egypt. - 11. The Resurrection. - 12. The Raising of Lazarus. - 13. Christ appears before the priest. - 14. Christ appears before Saint Francis. - 15. Saint Anthony of Padua reading. - 16. Christopher carrying the Child Jesus. - 17. Saint Sebastian.

The inner hinges flaked. The margins somewhat browned (the miniatures leaves somewhat more so) and with finger soiling, some traces of handling on the lower corner. Some leaves with old restoration. The miniatures with faint rubbing in parts (some slight loss of paint). Overall in very good condition with the exception of the double leaf with the cycle of the Passion, which has somewhat stronger rubbing and with a restored tear (ca 3cm in the image), and in a comparatively unfavourable condition.
