A PAIR OF SCONCES WITH A MALE HERM
Louis XVI style, France, the end of the 19th century/beginning of the 20th century.
Gilt bronze. Wall mount in the form of a Bacchanalian male herm with pilasters and pine cones on top. The boy is holding two crossed foliage light branches with laurel nozzles. One numbered 523-3862 on verso. Perforations for fittings for electricity.
H 35 cm.
Rubbed. Gilding with a few losses to the patina.
A sketch by Louis Prieur from ca. 1775 may have served as a model for this male herm. Similar male herms can be found in the Metropolitan Museum in New York (Inv. No. 07.225.510.312a, b).
