The sculpture presented here, “Unity of three identical cylinders”, notably illustrates Max Bill's philosophy that art, aesthetics and mathematics have a profound connection to one another.
The spatial arrangement of the three identical cylinders conveys a feeling of stability and balance. With their geometric clarity and reduced formal language, the cylinders invite the viewer to consider how simple shapes can represent complex relationships and meanings. In addition, the arrangement generates a dynamic relationship to the surrounding space, which allows the viewer to interpret the sculpture from different perspectives.
The choice of material, gold-plated brass, and the pure surface finish give the work a timeless elegance.
