What caused an uproar in the watch world 50 years ago has now become a cult object: the sporty, elegant Nautilus from Patek Philippe. A watch made of steel did not fit into the cliché of gold luxury watches – especially not in this striking size and extravagant shape. Patek Philippe's aim was to appeal to a new generation of active, sporty people. The launch of the watch was supported by an advertising campaign that was as original as it was bold: “One of the most expensive watches in the world is made of steel!” was the headline of a sensational advertisement.
