ANTHROPOMORPHIC MEZCALA FIGURE

Late Preclassic, Mezcala, Mexico, ca. 300-100 BC.
Greyish-green volcanic stone carved in relief. Standing figure with forearms in relief, placed diagonally on the stomach. The legs split. Geometric and canted facial features. Distinctive eyebrow arches, nose, mouth and receding forehead. On a chrome-plated steel base.
H 34 cm, L 9.3 cm.

Chips to the head. Minor flaking to the stone surface.

Provenance:
- European private collection since the 1970s (according to Galerie Mermoz).
- Galerie Mermoz, Paris/Basel, November 13, 1998 (copy of invoice included).
- Swiss private collection, acquired from the above gallery.
