IVORY RELIEF “CARITAS ROMANA/CIMON AND PERO”
Flemish, ca. 1700.
Ivory plaque carved in high relief. Allegorical depiction of mercy, so-called "caritas romana" in the form of a woman sitting on a rock, offering her breast to a chained and imprisoned old man. Mounted on a later, green velvet backing.
11.8 × 12 cm.
