Matthias Eberle: Liebermann. Werkverzeichnis der Gemälde und Ölstudien 1900–1935, Munich 1996,vol. II, pp. 1056–58, no. 1922/13 (ill.).

This wonderful portrait shows Lola Lea Leder, originally a British citizen and born in Galicia, where she spent the first years of her life with her grandmother before coming to Chemnitz at the turn of the century. In 1914 she married the textile merchant David Leder. He had his wife portrayed several times by Liebermann and other artists, including Lovis Corinth. Liebermann also made an etching of this portrait. The artist seems to have been altogether taken with this work: In an encounter with the art dealer Hugo Perls, he is said to have shown him his "most beautiful picture", "the Leder, but you can't get it, no one can get the 'Leder'." (Hugo Perls, in: Von Kunst, Künstlern und Kunsthandel, München 1962, p. 53).
