LARGE FOSSILISED SEED FERN

Neuropteris dussartii
Carboniferous, 359 - 300 million years
Piesberg quarry, Northwest Germany
77 × 53 × 8.2 cm

The object presented here is a large and decorative fossilised seed fern called Neuropteris dussartii. The origin of this ancient plant dates back to the Carboniferous period, 359–300 million years ago. Neuropteris dussartii is characterised by the blunt, compact outline of its leaflets and somewhat wavy leaf margins.

During the Carboniferous period, for the first time in the history of our planet, swamp vegetation covered large areas of tropical land. This flora consisted of a wide and fascinating array of plants, including ferns like the Neuropteris dussartii. Its fossilised remains now make up the largest coal reserves worldwide.

The fronds of this specimen are spread out across the surface of the stone and fossilised in remarkable detail. The intricate detail of the leaves and textures of the stems are clearly visible, with areas of the once green fern transformed into various shades of silvery blue, orange and yellow.
