STATUE: HEADPIECE OF A SPIRIT

Burma
Circa 1890
Wood, deer antlers
14 × 12 × 36 cm (measurements not including stand)

Nats are spirits worshipped in Burma and neighbouring countries. This is an indigenous belief that exists in conjunction with Buddhism.

Practitioners of nat worship believe that everything in the world is governed by nats, or spirits. Places, people, trees, rocks and areas of life are all associated with particular spirits – and not all of them benign. Nats can guard and protect, but they can also be mischievous and vengeful. These types of nats require offerings to keep them benevolent.

This originaly was a very rare type of statue, which depicts a human head with a nat or spirit head on top, crowned with antlers of an animal. This object is thought to be the top part of one of these double-headed statues.
