"My investigations have nothing to do with the objects themselves. My painting tries to represent movement, vibration, light, space, time, things that exist but which do not have a determined form, and the only way I have found to do this is to attempt to represent the relationships between them." Jesús Rafael Soto

The extraordinary art installation "Trois cercles noirs" from 1996 presents a captivating visual challenge. With its accomplished combination of different materials and colours, it offers the viewer an interactive experience within a world of optical illusions. Three complete black shapes as well as several suggested, half-finished circles, strokes and metal rods create the appearance of movement in this large-scale work. Since they are merely attached to the upper edge with wires and hang loosely, they give the appearance of floating. The weight of the metallic forms causes the wires to form parallel lines, reinforcing the impression of translocation and dynamism. With the fine white vertical lines on the black background, Jesús Rafael Soto also skilfully suggests visual depth.
