IRON CASKET
Germany, dated 1606.
Rectangular iron box with hinged lid and lock, on flattened feet. The edges with flame moldings and remnants of paintwork or gilding. The walls and the lid inlaid with pierced, chiseled brass plates in the form of trailing flowers, winged hybrid creatures and grotesque figures. The inside of the lock plate bears an engraved decoration in the form of a crowned double-headed eagle and the monogram IMK as well as the date 1606. Lock with six bolts. Keyhole under the sliding lid. 1 key. Inscribed at the bottom: "Heinz u. Adrienne Haushofer zu ihrer Verlobung 1928 von Max, Caroline u. Richard Bernheimer in München.
