VERDURE "À GRANDES FEUILLES"

Probably Enghien, 2nd half of the 16th century..
Large cabbage leaves with a large bird and two smaller birds between columns with caryatids and figures on the upper section. Top with grotesque cartouche. Border decorated with fruits and flowers.
250 × 240 cm.


Faded. Sides trimmed. Losses and restorations.

Provenance: Private collection, Suisse romande.

This kind of tapestry with landscape subjects featuring large leaves with birds was very popular in Flanders and was produced in various places. Cf. a similar verdure originating from Enghien at: Guy Delmarcel. La Tapisserie flamande. Paris 1999, p. 171, also a verdure "à grandes feuilles" with a similar border design in: Guy Delmarcel, Ingrid de Meûter, The cinquantenaire Tapestries.
