Lot 3015* - A204 Old Master Paintings - Friday, 31. March 2023, 02.00 PM
NETHERLANDISH SCHOOL, 16th century
A bath house scene.
Oil on panel.
35.3 × 51.7 cm.
Provenance:
European private collection.
This interesting bathhouse scene shows influences of similar depictions by Jan Gossaert (1478–1532) or Dirk Vellert (1511–1570), as indicated by Prof. John Hand, whom we thank for his assistance. Dürer's woodcut ‘Männerbad’ in the Kunsthalle Bremen (inv. 31576) may also have been known to the artist of our work. Prof. Larry Silver, whom we also thank for his assistance with the cataloguing, also points to stylistic parallels with the work of Matthias Gerung (1500–1570).
