ARMORIAL PANEL "DE LA RIVIÈRE"
Switzerland, dated 1556.
Colorless glass, blue and red overlay glass as well as purple, light-blue and light-green overlay glass, painted in schwarzlot and silver yellow. Depiction of the donor's coat of arms on a light-green damask ground, held by two unicorns and surmounted by a helmet and crest as well as another unicorn. The bottom with a cartouche inscribed: ANT BERN DE LA RIVIÈRE / REGIS CHRISTIANISS APUD / HELVETIOS MINISTER 1556. The upper images with tendrils and cavorting putti.
Inner dimensions 44.5 × 32 cm.
Numerous cracks, repairs and repairs to the lead. Upper left-hand part of the arch replaced, small repairs above the head of the left unicorn and to the helmet.
According to the inscription, the donor of the panel on offer was a Minister of the French King Henry II (1547-1559) in 1556. However, his name is not found in the Historical Biographical Dictionary of Ambassadors residing in Switzerland in the period between 1430-1919.
