BOARD GAME TOKEN
Southern Germany, probably Augsburg, ca. 1580.
Turned rosewood gaming piece, mounted with a miniature relief, probably of boxwood, with a carved relief depiction of Judith with the head of Holofernes. Gilt decorative band. Loss in the upper section to the hat of the woman in the background.
Ø 5.5 cm.
A scientific C14 examination of the wood of the carving suggests a date between 1444-1515 or 1590-1621.
The gaming piece on offer was presented to the Germanic National Museum in 1995. It was classified by Hermann Maué as Augsburg work and entered into the Photograph Collection of the museum.
A game piece with a similar depiction and of comparable quality is in the Kunstkammer of the Museum of Fine Arts in Vienna, and is attributed to the carver Hans Kels the Elder and dated 1537 (Kunstkammer, Inv. No. 3424).
