LARGE RENAISSANCE CASSONE (MARRIAGE CHEST)
Florence, 15th century and later.
Walnut, poplar, maple, and other woods inlaid in geometric reserves and fillets, and carved with capitals in the style of Michele di Giovanni da Fiesole (1418-1458). Long, sarcophagus-shaped body on a later base. Paneled front with very fine geometric inlays. The original outer parts, mounted on a later body. Later locks and mounts.
239 × 72 × 97 cm.
Various losses, cracks and repairs. The outer woodwork of the chest on offer is preserved in a very nice condition with old patina, the blind wood structure was replaced later and fitted with small locks. The lower, profiled base part, likewise later.
